My interest in intercultural issues began long before I turned to psychotherapy. I have always been curious about people, about the different ways of living, of relating to one another and of understanding the world. Learning languages, travelling and engaging with other cultures has been, and continues to be, an important part of my personal journey.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to experience diverse cultural contexts – experiences that have allowed me to discover new ways of thinking, feeling and making sense of reality. Each encounter has reminded me that there is no single way of seeing the world, and that our history, language and culture profoundly influence how we experience life.
Over time, I have come to realise that culture is not just about where we come from. It also shapes how we express ourselves, how we experience our relationships, what we mean by wellbeing, and even how we talk about our emotions. For me, engaging with other cultures has always been a way of better understanding others and broadening my own perspective on the world.
On a personal level, this experience has taught me to maintain a broad and sensitive perspective towards people and their different ways of being in the world. It has also allowed me to live with greater freedom, recognising that our identity is not built solely on what we have inherited or known all our lives, but also on what we discover in other places and choose to make our own.
This is the perspective that I bring to my therapeutic work today: a sensitive approach to each person’s history, language and cultural context.
